DIY CHRISTMAS TREE

This month our host Terrie challenged us to do something creative with a Dollar Store Tree. My first challenge was finding a tree… man they sell out super fast! Thankfully one of my blog friends found 2 for me! Thank you Jessica!!

I decided instead of making something out of the tree (since it’s the final day 😂😂), I want to DIY decorations for the tree. Decor can be super costly and my goal was decorate the tree without buying anything for it.

I started by emptying out the box that I used for my Thanksgiving centerpiece and placing a tree there. I then placed the second one in the pitcher of my antique wash basin.

Ornaments

My plan is to DIY all of the ornaments. I decided to make an orange slice garland, a salt dough garland, and to use bleached pine cones.

Orange slice garland

Items needed:

• Oranges
• Twine
• Cookie sheet
• Pizza pan with holes
• Knife

Thinly slice oranges and use a paper towel and pat them dry.

Then either place them in the oven directly on the rack or use a pizza pan that has holes in it.

I Used the pizza pan for the oranges and then placed a cookie sheet on the shelf under the oranges to catch any liquid off of them.

Turn the oven to the lowest setting (200 or less) and bake the oranges for 3 hours turning them every 30 minutes.

Then thread the twine through the oranges.

Salt Dough Garland

Items needed:

• Flour
• Salt
• Water
• Rolling pen
• Paint or glitter to decorate
• Twine

Use 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 1 cup water. Mix all ingredients and then knead the dough. Flour your surface and your rolling pen. Form dough into a ball and then roll it out. Use cookie cutters and cut out ornaments. I used a straw to make a hole for the twine. Then bake at 170 for 3 hours. Let cool for an hour. After ornaments have cooled for an hour then decorate however you want. Finally thread the twine through tying each ornament as you put it on the twine.

Bleached Pine cones

Items needed:

• Pine cones
• Water
• Bleach
• Bucket
• Twine

Mix water and bleach into the bucket. I used 1/4 bucket bleach and the rest water. Place pine cones in the bucket and let sit for 24 hours. Then remove the pine cones form the bucket and allow them to dry, preferably in the sun.

Decorate

Now decorate your trees as you like.

After I had them decorated how I wanted I then sprayed the tree with the canned snow. I plan on adding some battery operated twinkle lights 🙂

After decorating I figured out 2 things:

1. My ornaments were too large for these small trees. Next time I will make smaller ornaments.
2. There really isn’t a need for the twine on the round ornaments and the oranges. Next time I will just place them on each limb.

For the second tree I added the pine cones and sprayed with snow! SUPER EASY!

Total cost was $2 for the trees 🙌🏽 Everything else I already had.
