Where did summer go? I have no clue how it’s almost over. Anyone else feel like this? As much as I love fall decor…. I’m not ready to give up on summer just yet! What about y’all?

For my project I set out to make a peg rail shelf for my shiplap wall. I accidentally picked up the wrong size wood for the rail 💁🏻‍♀️, so I ended up just making a peg rail. I still love it and it was very easy to make, BUT I’ll for sure be adding an additional piece of wood and shelf to it soon.

Items Need:

• 1” dowel rod 6ft long (the length you need with be determination by how many pegs you are adding)
• 1×3 8ft board
• Wood glue
• Sand paper ~120’grit
• Nail gun with finishing nails (or hammer and nails if your don’t have a nail gun)
• Drill
• 1” Paddle bit for drill (to make 1” holes on rail)
• Paint
• Pencil
• Tape measure

Cuts:

• Dowel rod 17- 4” pegs (for 5” apart spacing)
• 1×3 7’

First

Make all of you cuts as listed above. For my peg rail I’m using a 1” dowel rod and cut 4” pegs that will be 5” apart.

I used the miter saw to make the cuts, but be really careful since they are short cuts and they tend to roll while you are trying to cut! We don’t need anyone losing a finger!!!

Use your sand paper or sanding pad and sand your board and pegs

Next

Find center of peg of your board. Mine is 84” long so center is 42” (I like simple number and none of that… 3 lines past 42 🤣)Mark the center of your board at 42” and 1 1/2” down.

I didn’t center my pegs in the middle of the board just in case I want to come back in later and add a small shelf above my rail.Once you find the middle of your board go left of center and then right of center marking all of your spots where the pegs will go.

Next

Use your paddle bit and drill and make all of the holes on your board for your pegs using your marks. Sand the edges of each hole.Add your pegs to each hole. You can use your wood glue for this. We actually didn’t use any glue because they fit pretty tight and don’t have plans to have anything heavy on the pegs. Also, your paint will help hold them in place.Now paint you board and pegs.

Last

Hang your peg rail. We used our nail gun for this but you could just use a hammer and nails. >>>> If you want to add a shelf over your peg rail (which I plan to do soon) instead of a 1×3 board for the rail use a 1 x 4 and then for your shelf use a 1×6 cut at 7’1″ (overhang 1/2” on each end).Isn’t it super cute? And it was so easy!!!
